Fort Mill Care Center Families In Need Increasing

Judy with the Fort Mill Care Center says the number of clients is really up lately…

In July the Fort Mill Care Center had 41 NEW clients..

In August they had 50 NEW…. those are some BIG numbers for any one month!

During the month of August The Fort Mill Care Center had 591 families pass thru our doors for various reasons, and that is NOT counting the number of people that came in on Mondays to sign up for the Carolina Community Actions LIHEAP program…. Nor is that counting how many came to the 6 “free food” give-aways in August.

1st Miss Strawberry Queen Crowned At Nations Ford High School

The first Miss Strawberry Queen, or I should say Queens, were crownd last night at the South Carolina Strawberry Festival Pageant hosted at Nations Ford High School in Fort Mill SC.

The Fort Mill Times reported today “Avery Close was crowned Teen Miss Strawberry Queen and Anna Skidmore was crowned Miss Strawberry Queen”. See the full story in the Fort Mill Times article .

Save Our Schools Resolution From The Fort Mill School District

The following resolution has been passed by several South Carolina school distircts to save our schools and stop cutting State funding. See Fort Mill School Board’s resolution passed March 8th, 2010.

A RESOLUTION OF THE FORT MILL SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF TRUSTEES

WHEREAS, South Carolina is experiencing a severe economic crisis that is significantly impacting state revenue; and

WHEREAS, over the past two fiscal years South Carolina K-12 public schools have received General Fund budget cuts totaling $484 million which equates to more than a 20 percent reduction; and WHEREAS, these budget cuts have reduced the base student cost to $1,764 per student, reflecting 1996-1997 funding levels; and

WHEREAS, Education Improvement Act funds have been reduced $112 million over that same two-year period; and

WHEREAS, the most recent figures for the proposed 2010-2011 state budget include additional EIA cuts of $9 million, and EFA cuts of $85 million, reflecting a base student cost of $1,630 (1995 funding level); and

WHEREAS, further cuts in revenue will harm the education of every child in South Carolina, threatening the State’s decades-long effort to raise the levels of educational achievement and personal income of the people of our State; and Continue reading

Fort Mill Schools State Funding Concerns

There has been much discussion and speculation on why the Fort Mill School District had to propose making several severe cuts to the 2010-2011 school budget.

One group of parents have leaped into action to try and save the middle school sports program. You can read more about the middle school athletic booster’s pay to play proposal at www.fortmillathletics.org.

Unfortunately the middle school sports program is just a small piece of the budget and program/job cut concerns. How did Fort Mill schools end up losing 8 million in funding for next year?

Plan to attend Fort Mill South Carolina Strawberry Festival

Fort Mill South Carolina Strawberry Festival count down has  official begun! The festival will be a celebration of spring… and all things strawberry!

The South Carolina Strawberry Festival will kick off on Thursday, April 29, 2010 with the Miss South Carolina Strawberry Festival Pageant at Nation Ford High School from 7:00 to 9:00 pm (1400 AO Jones Blvd)

On Friday, April 30, 2010, the Festival will be in full swing at Walter Y. Elisha Park. Festivities will begin at 6:00 pm and will feature arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, and activities for the entire family including live music “Strawberry Jam,” and the day will end with a fireworks display at 10:00 pm.

Saturday, May 1, 2010 the festival begins again at 9:00 am. Come hear the best local talent during the Colgate Country Showdown, presented by WRHI and Interstate 107. Continue reading
